Absinthe and Absinth

Absinthe and absinth. What is the difference between the two?

Absinthe (Absinthe with the e) is the French spelling of Absinthe and is the most common form.

Absinth (Absinthe without the e) is the Czech spelling of Absinthe and is the spelling found on both our bottles of Absinthe and on some other shopping sites.

Throughout the site, we prefer to refer to Absinthe with the e as it is the spelling recognized by most by our customers. From Moulin Rouge to From Hell, Absinthe has become, in our opinion the universal spelling for the drink.

Absinth King Of Spirits Gold

Absinth King Of Spirits Gold

Originally based on a Swiss recipe this Czech Absinthe has no artificial color or preservatives, and contains 100mg of the psychoactive thujone adored by some of the world’s most notorious artists and writers. Van Gogh, Picasso, Hemingway…Bob Dylan, Marilyn Manson and Eminem are just a few who used and drew inspiration from this original Absinthe and its effects.

Naturally green in color, the ‘King of Spirits Gold’ is 70% alcohol (140 proof) and is bottled with fresh herbs and wormwood that distill inside and enhance the taste and thujone content. All the ingredients are carefully selected to ensure its distinctive taste.

The King of Spirits Gold is great for veteran Absinthe drinkers and the adventurous alike.

Bottle Size: 0.7 Liters

Are there any appreciable difference between absinthe or absinth products?

Yes and no. As a blend of herbs, Absinthe has many different formulations. Each absinthe recipe differs from distillery to distillery and the resulting drink's taste would vary depending on which distillery or brand you purchased. There is often a marked taste difference between one brand and another due to differences in the herbs used in production as well as different production methods.

As such, Czech Absinth would have a difference in taste from French Absinthe as they are different distillers and producers. However, both types of drinks have a long history of production and a large number of followers. As in so many things in the world, it is all a matter of taste.

Which is more original? While Absinthe was first popularized in France, the subsequent ban drove many absinthe distilleries to relocate to other countries such a Spain, to change their absinthe formulations to remove wormwood(like Pernod) or stop production altogether.

The Czech Republic on the other hand has never banned or stopped production of absinth. As such, they have an unbroken stream of production for the last few years.

As such, in many ways, the more "original" absinthe formulations come from countries other than France these days. Spain and the Czech Republic are at the moment the two top producers of absinthe (with or without an e).
